When i stood beside his statue, the top of my head reached only to the top of his forearm. In 1698 he stayed at a house in deptford belonging to the writer and diarist, john evelyn. He brought his mates along for the good times, including a court dwarf (see the statue), and wrecked john evelyn’s estate where he was staying, by holding loads of student house parties.

Deptford was therefore a natural choice for peter i, tsar of russia when he travelled to britain in 1698. In january 1698, peter the great of russia came to deptford to study shipbuilding, staying for a few months at sayes court, a house he rented from the diarist john evelyn. His trip (taking in the shipyards of holland as well as london) was mean to be one of research, the end goal to establish the first russian navy.
